Missing Scene Challenge 9 Without Reservations This is really the quintessential Face h/c episode, isn't it? So much could have been explored in relationships and reactions, and so little actually was. I'm going to offer some ideas below, but you really are free to respond to this very slashable episode in any way that you wish. While this ep lends itself well to a Face/Murdock pairing, it certainly doesn't have to be the pairing you use. In fact, Face doesn't even have to be one of the members of the slashed pair. This episode is either the last or next-to-last episode of the series, depending on who you talk to. It was shown last, but if you read Murdock's "Almost Fini" shirt, it seems to have been meant to be the next-to-last episode. This may or may not make a difference to you, depending on which of the ideas below you choose to use. SCENARIO 1 We see relatively little interaction between Face and Murdock after Face is shot…an oversight, to be sure, and one that we ought to rectify. After Face is carried into the kitchen, do he and Murdock get a chance to talk? As far as I can remember, there was always at least one bad guy in the kitchen, presumably to prevent anyone from escaping out the back door, so anything they say will be overheard unless you can find a way to send the guard somewhere else. What would the conversation be like if Face and Murdock are in the relationship? What would the conversation be like if Face and/or Murdock are in a relationship with someone else on the team? They can still be best friends. Write a scene that describes what happens when they're together in the kitchen. SCENARIO 2 If you're looking for a little writing exercise, here's one that might be interesting. Take one scene in the show (for example, the part where Face is shot, Frankie and Murdock hurry to his side, and the bad guys confront Murdock about who he is before they make Murdock and Frankie carry Face into the kitchen) and write it from different people's perspectives. Not everyone in the room is going to experience the shooting the same way. They're not going to notice the same details, feel the same emotions, or react the same way. How do those few minutes play out for Face? What does he see, hear, feel, think? How do those few minutes play out for Murdock? For Frankie? What about for the nervous young bad guy or the woman in the back of the restaurant who just found out her husband was cheating on her? You're welcome to use any bit of the show you want to for an exercise like this. It's fun to do and see what you can come up with. You can write from first or third-person point of view, or even both, if you wish. SCENARIO 3 When Hannibal and BA find out the others need help, they hurry down to find out what is going on and to formulate a plan. Things move pretty fast from that point on, but there is a scene in the van where they contact Murdock, realize that Face has been injured, and know that all three of the men are in danger.. If either BA or Hannibal is in a relationship (or wants to be in a relationship) with one of the three in the restaurant, what is he thinking about? Has this relationship been going smoothly or not? Does he have sudden regrets now, knowing that his lover is in jeopardy? Is he simply worried about what the results of this incident are going to be on his lover? You might cover this through a conversation between BA and Hannibal or through the character's inner thoughts, or both. SCENARIO 4 After they take care of the bad guys, BA and Hannibal hustle Face out to the van while Murdock and Frankie chase down the bad cop. What happens in the van on the way to the hospital? Again, this doesn't necessarily have to involve Face. What if BA is driving the van, listening to the sounds of Hannibal tending Face in the back, and worrying not only about Face, but also about whichever of the men is BA's lover? That could even be interspersed with bits of whatever is going on in the van intruding on his thoughts while he races through town to the hospital. This might be a good time to think outside the box a little and try something novel. SCENARIO 5 What happens at the hospital? Who (if anyone) is with Face when he wakes up? What has been happening in the meantime? How does this relate to the culmination of the fifth season eps? SCENARIO 6 We get to see a nice (but alas, too short) scene of Face recovering at home all tucked up comfortably on the couch and swathed in blankets. It seems obvious he's still rather a long way from being healthy, which makes one wonder why he's there and not still in the hospital. On the other hand, his continued feebleness creates marvelous opportunities for some very nice slashy scenes, not to mention some good team bonding stuff (that's bonding, not bondage!) to help the team as a whole heal whatever rifts (if any) have been caused by the trials and tribulations of the fifth season while they tend Face. Need I say more? SCENARIO 7 If you just want to use this ep as a starting point, you can always write the story of what happens next, with references back to the episode itself. Obviously it would be a fairly traumatic event for the whole team and especially for Face, and it would certainly make sense for story that followed it to make frequent reference to it. The above are just ideas. Most of us probably have something already in mind for what we would have liked to see happen in this episode, ways we would have rewritten some or all of it, aftermath scenarios that deal with the recovery period, etc. You can write anything you want as long as it has its roots in the events in Without Reservations and as long as it's slash. It can be as long or as short as you want it to be, and you can submit multiple stories if you want to try out more than one idea or just use multiple scenarios as part of a longer story. The whole point of this is to give us all a chance to rewrite the show from a slash point of view and give us some stimulating writing exercises. And, of course, to have fun!
