Stars in Their Eyes

The night was dark and full of stars.
On the hilltop, Face and Murdock stretched out on their blanket and stared up at the sky.
Face’s head rested on Murdock’s shoulder. He was feeling... wistful. The night was too beautiful. Everything was too beautiful.
Murdock was too beautiful.
It was too dark to see, but he didn’t need his eyes to know that much. Soft, wispy hair. Long limbs, a graceful touch. Dark eyes that made you feel... safe. Loved.
They had been picking out the constellations, but they didn’t know very many. Just the big dipper and the north star. Orion’s belt. The pleides. They’d argued (playing) over whether they’d really seen a shooting star, out of the corner of their eyes, and got a wish because of it.
Face wished anyway.
Always.
Always Murdock, here beside him. Safe, happy, together.
Always.
He shivered. The night was cold and still.
Murdock pulled him closer, and he buried his head in Murdock’s shoulder, turning, wrapping his arm around Murdock’s warm chest.
Murdock kissed his forehead, rested warm lips in his hair. Tucked the blanket around them and held Face close. Their own small cocoon of warmth.
Murdock’s breath was warm on Face’s cheek. He was humming “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” softly under his breath, singing bits and parts where he remembered the words.
They cuddled there all night, resting in each other’s arms, until dawn came and the stars receded gently into day.
