Research Groups Tune In To Solve Kokomo Mystery Hum

KOKOMO, Ind. -- [AP] The city has received 12 proposals from consultants and research groups interested in studying a mysterious hum that dozens of residents say they hear.
City attorney Ken Ferries said he expected to recommend a company to the city's Board of Public Works and Safety sometime in September or early October.
The firm selected will be expected to identify the cause of the low frequency noise that has plagued some residents since 1999.
The proposals came from as far away as Oakland, Calif., and from as close as Purdue University.
Cost will be a factor in deciding who is awarded the project, Ferries told the Kokomo Tribune for a story yesterday. The City Council this year set aside $100,000 for the study.
Campanella Associates, of Hilliard, Ohio, one of the 12 that submitted bids, was also one of three engineering firms hired by former city resident Diane Anton to study the hum.
Anton, who has suffered health problems including severe headaches and fatigue, has since moved to South Bend to escape the noise.
In that 1999 study, Campanella recorded low levels of a low-frequency sound at Anton's home and at other locations in the city.
The firm's report identified a factory as a possible source of the noise.
