Stuttgart - It comes in the night, remains up to the early morning and robs many of their sleep: A puzzling humming tone, which torments hundreds of people in all parts of Germany. Now the Department of the Environment of Bad Wuerttemberg wants to examine the phenomenon. Country-wide measurements and hearing investigations will get underway in order to seek out the cause for the mysterious noise.
So far no-one has discovered where the indefinable deep tones, which sound similar as a heating or a refrigerator, come from. Speculation over its cause includes everything from electromagnetic oscillations up to American espionage techniques. Heinrich Menges of the national institute for environmental protection said: " We assum that these oscillations enter the buildings from the outside, where those who hear the humming tone are."
In twelve different houses acoustic professional will spend the next three months attempting to track down the mysterious noise - just like spirit hunters in the film "Ghostbusters". In a house in Schoemberg (Zollernalbkreis) there already were experts - nevertheless they left without concrete results. Their sensitive measuring instruments registered a deep tone, which was situated in the front of the house. But "spirit hunter" Menges admitted: "we do not have notion as to what it could have been."
The preparations for carrying out research are enormously complex: First the specialists must find suitable places. Multi-family houses, in which constant background noises are to be heard, are unsuitable. As are houses in proximity to motorways [highways], because the measuring instruments would constantly be deflected here also.
Brummton victims complain about sleep disturbances, heart [...] and increased blood pressure. They are often strained and provoke easily. As well as Bad Wuerttemberg the noise is also heard by people in Hamburg, Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Lower Saxony region.

Mysterious humming - An uncanny tone makes the people of Hamburg nervous. Experts try to provide an answer - so far in vain.
Humans hear a humming. In the house it is louder, while outside more quiet. The plugs to the refrigerator are out. The humming remains. Then they turn off the power to the hotwater boiler or the washing machine. Once again, the humming remains. Helpless they call a neighbor, it is perhaps the circulation pump in its [...] in the garden, nevertheless it's switched off. Again, the mysterious humming remains. People suffer the effects of headaches, are unable any longer to sleep.
In the beginning the strange humming sound was a good bar joke. Meanwhile, the humming has become a country-wide phenomenon. It occurred in Bad Wuerttemberg first and at present there are now country-wide measurements being made. The hum has also spread to Hamburg.
Examples of incidents: In the Kloevensteenweg a woman feels troubled by unexplainable humming. She reported "noise disturbance" to the department of emmission control in the environmental office of the district Altona. "Today we visit with a noise meter and make a c-evaluation", said environmental technologist Martina Tessloff. A c-evaluation measures only deep tones. Normally Martina Tessloff's work involves measuring high tones: "circular saws are frequently the cause of complaints", she says. In the Kloevensteen it is not clear what is causing the problem. Tessloff said: "I thought it might be the close location of the HEW transformer station. But nothing hummed there. I am helpless."
As a hearing researcher and professor at the UKE, Rudolf Leuwer said: "We take the phenomenon from narrations of medical laymen as our only source of knowledge. The source of humming is a mystery to me." Patients with humming problems at the UKE often hear a cracking, which is caused by muscle twitching. Or they suffer from Tinnitus, constant tones heard within the ear.
The Internet is one source to discover information about the mystery humming. People can visit: www.brummen.de or www.brummt.de. There they can enter comments in the "book of humming " and give them joy to finally learn they are no longer alone. And although Hamburg environmental offices report only of few calls, in the "book of humming" dozens of stories have appeared from people in the Hamburg area and beyond. Suggestions for the cause include: Gas lines, ice drillings, wind machines, high-voltage equipment, the space station, and even UFOs, as one source commented: UFOs in their flight over the earth at slow-speeds would produce humming noises. Is the invasion of the extraterrestial ones thus approaching? A call to the office of UFO investigator Erich von Daeniken in the Switzerland was unfortunately unsuccessful: "Mr. Daeniken is not available to speak until Friday", says the secretary.
