Zimbabwean Police Rescue Woman Accused Of Being A Vampire

There was pandemonium at Machipisa shopping centre in Highfield on Tuesday as thousands of residents thronged around a woman accused of “blood-sucking” and suspected of causing mysterious deaths at every home she visits.
Riot police were forced to fire teargas to disperse the agitated crowd. The woman has been the subject of Harare’s rumour mill.
Shepherd Magwenzi, 26, who was at the scene at Machipisa, said the woman was apprehended when she visited a home in the Jerusalem section of Highfield, asking for food.
Terence Duma, 21, said members of the public manhandled her before taking her to the Johane Masowe Apostolic faith sect. The religious group’s members refused to have anything to do with her. The police came to her rescue, saving her from imminent mob violence.Several women at the scene said they were living in fear of the woman, who reportedly wanders around the suburb with a baby strapped to her back.
Contacted for comment, the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association (Zinatha)’s, Professor Gordon Chavunduka, said his organisation had received reports of the mystery woman.He said Zinatha would investigate the matter “very soon”.
