Fast forward twelve years. Our cute little hero is now an angsty teenager with major issues and a solar surfer. After doing some awesome solar-surfing tricks, he gets caught be some robocops and taken back to his mother, Sarah’s, inn. There we discover that he’s been having a rash of troubles with the cops lately but Sarah really seems to think he’s turned a corner. Family friend, Dr. Doppler hopes so but then Jim and the robocops come in, dashing Sarah’s hopes about Jim. Dr. Doppler is witty. Sarah promises the robocops that Jim won’t do it again and Jim receeds further into his angsty exterior.
Later, sitting on the roof, Jim overhears Sarah discussing her troubles with Dr. Doppler. Sarah admits she doesn’t know what to do with Jim and she’s at the end of her rope. Just as she’s getting to the climax of her mini-rant, a little space-pod crash lands outside the inn and Jim rushes to make sure the occupants are all right.
The occupants turn out to only be one occupant, an old turtle-like alien by the name of Billy Bones. Bones insists that Jim take him back to the inn whilst muttering incoherently about someone coming with gears and gyros. They get back to the inn and Sarah is dully horrified and Dr. Doppler is witty. Just as Bones expires, he gives unto Jim a mysterious sphere and tells him to beware the cyborg. They are all puzzled momentarily but then someone starts shooting at the inn!
Realizing pirates are attacking for some odd reason or the other, they all run upstairs and jump out a window into Dr. Doppler’s awaiting carriage. As they drive away, the inn goes up in flames and Sarah is very sad about this.
Later, at Dr. Doppler’s mansion, they learn that the inn burned to the ground and the pirates disappeared without a trace. Dr. Doppler is particularly entranced with the sphere that Bones gave Jim. As he rambles on about it’s mysteries, Jim unlocks them and the sphere proves to be a map of sorts leading to Treasure Planet itself! After much ado, Dr. Doppler and Jim convince Sarah to let Jim (and Dr. Doppler) go in search of Treasure Planet.
Sometime later, we find that Dr. Doppler has commissioned some sort of ship. In a particularly embarrassing piece of space-wear, Doppler shows up at the ship with Jim. They proceed to meet First Mate Arrow and Captain Amelia who makes numerous fast-paced and witty remarks. Doppler proceeds to be particularly clumsy and Amelia says that she wants to speak to them in her stateroom. She gets the map from Jim and tells him that he’ll be working as a cabin boy for the cook. He is unhappy (as usual).
They all go down to the galley to meet the cook come to find the cook is in fact a cyborg named Silver. Jim takes an immediate distrust to him (remember what Billy Bones said) but a similarly immediate liking to Silver’s bloby pet, Morph. Silver lets Jim go and watch the ship’s launch and mutters some dangerous talk as Jim scuttles out of the galley. The launch is very impressive and Jim is happily awed. After the launch, Silver resurfaces and tries to compliment Amelia who glares at him and asks why his cabin boy is aimlessly footling around in the shrouds. Silver is slightly embarrassed and assigns Jim some cabin boy work to do. Jim is unhappy.
While Jim is swabbing the deck (as per Silver’s instructions) he accidentally gets into a fight with one of the crew, a spider-like alien named Scroop. Jim has one of his few witty moments while bantering with Scroop. This infuriates Scroop and he is about to kill Jim when Silver appears as if from no where and stops Scroop. Mr. Arrow then appears (also as if from no where) and asks what’s going on. He knows that Scroop is at the bottom of it, but doesn’t openly say so. Silver then makes the crew disperse and tells Jim to stick to mopping and nothing else. He then sets Morph on him to make sure he doesn’t get into any more trouble.
Later, Silver is pleasantly surprised to discover Jim hasn’t destroyed the ship while mopping. Seizing the opportunity to take to Jim, he inquires after Jim’s father, wondering why he didn’t teach his son to pick his fights more carefully. Jim acknowledges that his father wasn’t really the teaching type so much as the leaving home type. Silver feels badly and then promises to teach Jim all he can and more. Jim is apparently offended by this but Silver musses his hair which segways beautifully into…
A montage of Silver teaching Jim various things interspersed with scenes of Jim’s childhood and Jim acting angsty. We learn how Jim’s father ignored him mostly before leaving when Jim was about ten. By the end of the montage, Silver is now Jim’s father figure and best friend all in one. They have a grand old time in a skit they borrow before coming back to the ship. Jim lets on the things are changing for the better with him and hints around about the treasure. Silver pointedly starts oiling his various mechanical parts indicating that plans can go astray. Jim asks if it was worth it and Silver says how he hopes it will be.
Suddenly the ship is rocked and they dash back on deck to find that the star Pelucid has gone supernova. After near death, the ship is saved by some of Dr. Doppler’s quick calculations and Amelia’s quick thinking. During the storm, however, Scroop cut Mr. Arrow’s lifeline in revenge and Mr. Arrow dies. Scroop then blames the whole thing on Jim and no one will believe Jim in innocent. Silver knows the truth of the matter and goes to comfort Jim later.
Jim has become doubly angsty now that he is falsely accused but Silver delivers an inspiring speech to the lad and really establishes himself as a father substitute. Unfortunately, Scroop overheard this bit of sentimentality.
Later, Jim is chasing Morph around and ends up in a barrel in the galley. Before he climbs back out, the galley fills up with most of the crew including Silver and Scroop. Scroop accuses Silver of going soft and Jim discovers that they have a mutiny in the making. Not only this, but Silver disclaims any affection for Jim saying that he only got close to Jim to keep him off the scent of the mutinous crew. Jim is horrified but at that moment, they arrive at Treasure Planet. The crew all runs back on deck to see Treasure Planet.
Jim climbs back out of the barrel in a state of horror and shock. He finally gets his thoughts together and starts for the door to tell Amelia and Doppler of this new development but is thwarted by the return of Silver, in search of his looking glass. Silver realizes Jim must have heard everything and they play a brief cat-and-mouse game before Jim pierces Silver’s bad leg and runs past him.
Amelia, Doppler and Jim grab the map and attempt to flee the ship to get away from the pirates who have now proclaimed their true colors. The ship’s canons fire on them but only hit the back of their little skit. They manage to land on Treasure Planet, but Amelia is wounded. After they discover they don’t actually have the map, she sends Jim out to find a better place to hide from the pirates since they have sent down a group to find the cast aways.
Jim discovers a crazy robot by the name of B.E.N. who has been marooned on the planet for a hundred years. As it turns out, B.E.N. worked for Captain Flint himself and has a place for them to hide. They go there but the pirates discover them thanks to the silliness to B.E.N. Jim and Silver briefly meet but Jim refuses to give Silver the map. (Jim doesn’t have the map, but Silver doesn’t actually know that.) Silver goes away feeling badly but angry. Jim and B.E.N. go back to B.E.N.’s little home and then, later that night, sneak back up the ship to get the map. Jim has a run-in with Scroop in which he almost (really almost) dies but Scroop is the one who inevitably dies. They retrieve the map and head back to Treasure Planet.
When they get there (and back to B.E.N.’s house) they find that Silver has taken Doppler and Amelia captive. Silver orders Jim to open the map which he reluctantly does. He then convinces Silver to take all of them with him on their little treasure hunt. The map leads them all to a bluff but then dies. The pirates get angry and threaten Jim. All of a sudden, the planet lights up and a big door opens in front of them. Jim remembers some ramblings of B.E.N. about how Flint stowed his treasure and realizes the treasure is hidden at the center of the planet and all they have to do is open the right door. Using the control pad they manage to get into the planet but step onto a trip wire.
They are all happy to see the platoons of gold but then everything starts to explode. Most of the pirates die and Jim is thrown against a wall. He can barely hold on while Silver holds to a ship filled with treasure. Morph points out Jim’s situation to Silver who must choose between fulfilling his dream of the treasure and his true affection for Jim. In the end, he chooses Jim (“blast me!”) and the two of them escape the inside of the planet.
Unfortunately, the rest of the planet is also exploding. Doppler, Amelia and B.E.N. swoop down in the ship and warn them that there isn’t much time left. They call get on the ship but then realize they don’t have enough power to get off the planet in time. Jim and Silver make Jim a makeshift solar surfer and he heads back to open a different door and save them. Doppler steers the ship back around and heads towards the door. After some strife, Jim gets the right door open at the last minute and they are all saved.
Amelia threatens to send Silver to jail since he’s still technically the pirate leader. He attempts to sneak away but Jim stops him. Silver and Jim both realize their little bond and Jim relents. Silver gives Morph as a gift and some gold he managed to ferret away so Sarah can rebuild her inn. Silver sails off into space.
Jim has been totally changed by his trip and is accepted to space academy. Happily ever after!
Jim: Without the map we're dead... if we try to leave we're dead... if we stay here...
Morph (enthusiastically): We're dead! We're dead we're dead we're dead!
Doppler: Dang it, Jim, I'm an astronomer, not a doctor! I mean I am a doctor, but I'm not that kind of doctor! I have a doctorate, it's not the same thing! You can't help people with a doctorate! You just sit there and you're useless!
Captain Amelia: Doctor. Can we make this as monosyllabic as possible. I don't much care for this crew YOU hired. They're... How did I describe them Arrow? I said something rather good this morning before coffee...
Mr. Arrow: A ludicrous parcel of driveling galoots, m'am.
Captain Amelia: There you go! Poetry!
B.E.N.: I feel like my life is passing before my eyes...at least I think it's my life...(loudly) WAS I EVER DANCING WITH AN ANDROID NAMED LUPE?!
Jim: Captain Flint!
B.E.N.: In the flesh! (pauses) Except for skin, organs or anything resembling flesh...
