Wurmser regroups but makes the same mistake, splitting his force, which is defeated first at Caliano (Sept. 5th) and then at Bassano (Sept. 8th)

November 15th - 17th, 1796
Another Austrian relief force under General Alvintzy is again split in two, Napoleon first defeating Alvintzy at the hard-fought battle of Arcola Agust 15th to 17th) before turning on Davidovich.

October 5th, 1794
The "whiff of grapeshot". Napoleon disperses the rebels of the 13th Vendimaire and saves the Convention.

February 2nd, 1797
Mantua falls to Napoleon who now invades Austria and forces the Austrians to sue for peace, ratified in the Treaty of Campo Formio (October 17th, 1797). The Austrian Netherlands become part of France and the French Cisalpine Republic of Northern Italy is recognized by Austria. The Italian campaign has lasted 13 months and Napoleon has achieved more than any French army in Italy for over 300 years. With an army of never more than 44,000 he had defeated more than twice that number and won a dozen major battles. 43,000 Austrians had either been killed, wounded or captured.

July 1st, 1798
Attempting to strengthen the French hold on the Mediterranean and open a channel of attack against the British possessions in India Napoleon lands with his army at Alexandria, Egypt and defeats the medieval style cavalry of the Mamelukes at the Battle of the Pyramids July 21st. The French enter and occupy Cairo.

August 1st, 1798
Battle of the Nile (Aboukir Bay). British admiral Horatio Nelson finds the French fleet crowded into the shallow anchorage of Aboukir Bay and destroys it. The French Admiral Brueys is killed and only two of 17 French warships survive.

February 9th to May 30th, 1799
Napoleon invades Syria to head off a Turkish counter-attack. He has initial victories at El Arish (Feb. 14th to15th) and Jaffa (March 3rd to 7th) but cannot take the cityof Acre. With plague ravaging his army Napoleon is forced to withdraw to Egypt.

July 25th, 1799
Napoleon and Murat defeat an Anglo-Turkish force that had been landed at Aboukir and, with the French position stabilized, Napoleon returns to France. The remaining French forces under General Menou were eventually defeated by General Abercrombie but were repatriated back to France.
