The History of John Cena's U.S. "Spinner" Championship Belt

Cena fired up over destruction of United States Championship
March 10, 2005
By Anthony Cali

ROANOKE, VA – As if losing the United States Championship under inauspicious circumstances last week wasn’t bad enough, John Cena had to witness the destruction of his customized spinner belt on SmackDown! this week.

At Armageddon in December, Cena debuted his one-of-a-kind spinner belt – a style made popular by many of the well-known rappers in the hip-hop community. Immediately, the belt developed a following of it’s own. Replica versions of the title sold out at venues across the country, and it frequented the WWEShop’s Top Ten List for weeks.

"I think what they did is bull$%!*," said Cena. "They think my [spinner belt] is hood, they think it’s classless, but it’s none of the above. It’s time for change. I don’t wrestle in boots, I don’t wrestle in tights – I do my own thing. That title was my contribution to how this business should evolve, and the people understood it – they got with it.

"Just look at all the signs in the audience representing the spinner belt," he continued, "and the following that not just myself, but that belt had. It proves the fans are ready for things to step up. I mean we’re not riding the horse drawn buggies no more, we’re onto the V12 with a six-speed. The business is changing too, and there are people, like JBL, who can’t accept change, because they know nothing about it."

"All this is doing, is just getting me ready for Mania," explained Cena. "Obviously, the US Title pretty much meant everything to me, so it was a rude awakening. I’ve got to concentrate on four guys instead of one guy, which makes my match against JBL at WrestleMania 21 a little tougher than I had originally planned."

"You gotta understand, for me to remake something as prestigious as the United States Title was a big deal," he continued. "That was my way of saying, ‘this the new wave, this is how it’s gonna be.’ And for them to take it from me last week, and destroy it this week, that’s about as low as it can go, so if they were looking to piss me off, mission accomplished."

The fired up Cena isn’t taking his WrestleMania 21 match-up lightly. In fact, the West Newbury, Mass native thinks that his best chance for redemption will be defeating JBL, capturing his WWE Championship, and then making a few alterations to the title.

"Where I come from, the code is an eye for an eye," barked Cena. "He took what I considered something near and dear to me, so my rebound is to take something he holds near and dear to himself. At WrestleMania 21, you’re gonna see that WWE Championship around the waist of John Cena, and you’d best believe there’s gonna be some changes made to that belt."
