The History of John Cena's World "Spinner" Championship Belt The Champ's New Bling Giving a Different Spin to the WWE Championship When you talk about John Cena, you have to talk about the championship belt. It's become the talk of WWE, and has instantly put Cena on the map as a champion who's not afraid to make some changes. The week after he won the WWE Championship from JBL at WrestleMania 21, the Doctor of Thuganomics debuted the new gold in unforgettable fashion on SmackDown! During a confrontation with the disgruntled former champ JBL, Cena had the brand-new spinning championship belt lowered from the ceiling, and wowed the crowd by proudly displaying it for everyone to see. "Not only has the WWE Championship evolved, but WWE in general has evolved," Cena says. "At the same time, if you look at the new WWE Championship belt, it still has that same aura of class and distinction as the elite trophy in WWE. It's got the spice of John Cena, but it also has the class of a WWE Championship." The new tricked-out spinning WWE Championship belt has continued what Cena started when he transformed his previous title, the United States Championship. "The U.S. title got a reaction," he says. "I really wanted to take the WWE Championship to another level. When I finally got my hands on it, I rreally wanted to do something special with it." The WWE Champion has certainly been making some major waves, and the new gold is one of the reasons why. Like everything the champion does, it makes a statement. "Everything evolves," Cena says. "That's just the way it is, and the way it's always been. When Hulk Hogan first started doing his thing, he wasn't exactly a typical Lou Thesz-style wrestler. I'm sure he was criticized by a lot of his peers, but he's the reason a lot of us are watching WWE today. So I think the things that are met with the most adversity are usually the better changes, because you're turning everybody's head. If everybody's sitting on their hands and they're not paying attention, then they're not reacting. If you get people loving it, or even hating it, then you're making a statement." Credit: Brian Solomon and WWE SmackDown! magazine. June, 2005. WWE.com: Where did the inspiration for the new WWE Championship belt come from? Cena: Just like the United States Championship, the WWE Championship
needed a makeover. When I won the U.S. Championship, that was everything to
me, and I remade it accordingly. And if the U.S. Championship was everything,
this is ten-fold. I had to come out real big on this, because everybody
already saw what I did to the U.S. Championship, and it had people thinking,
“what else can he do?” But this is what I’d want a title to be – anything and
everything – and there’s some crazy stuff on here. Cena: Like I said, I’m definitely adding more shine to it. Rest
assured, I’m still gonna kick this thing up a few notches. It’s gonna be even
nicer. Cena: I ain’t about doing things the traditional way, I’m about
doing things my way. And just the fact that JBL had that belt all that time
makes me want to change it up, ‘cause I’m sure it pissed him off. But of
course, some people may not agree with my modifications, but this is my vision
of what a World Championship should look like, and I think it’s class. Cena: First and foremost is the glaze. This things got all kinds of diamonds on it. You got round clear and pale yellow diamonds, round rubies. There are over 2,800 mini square Princess Cut diamonds, plus there are clear triangular and marquise cut diamonds, Marquise cut emeralds, clear Baquette [rectangular] cut diamonds, and one big 16mm clear diamond on the side plate. Altogether, there’s a 3,484 diamonds and gems. Then of course, you have the gold – 14K. My belt’s got more carrots than Bugs Bunny. And you know, it’s got to have the platinum. I mean this thing’s got so much shine on it, it weighs like 12 pound. And it’s worth so much loot, that I’m actually considering hiring two armed bodyguards to escort me and the championship around.
