Notes:

1. Pat Patterson wins a fictious tournament to win the title. From Gregory Danko: "Pat Patterson's most famous title known to many today was being the very first holder of the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The storyline claims that Pat won a tournament in Rio de Janiero for it, but the real story is slightly different. Pat had defeated Ted DiBiase (who was a popular good guy in those days!) for the WWWF North American Title. However, Vince McMahon Sr. found out that another promotion had a belt of the same name, so he came up with a new title and awarded it to Pat. An estimated date for the title creation is August 1, 1979."

2. Tito Santana continues to defend the title for two weeks before the title changed aired on television.
